Former Sunshine Miners Find Work in Montana

Because the forces of erosion and gravity tend to carry lighter materials like quartz away more easily, the heavy minerals like gold or silver will tend to be concentrated in the general area around the vein outcrop. These concentrations are what make residual placers so attractive.
Gold in Iceland?
Normally, one does not look at volcanic islands in a search for gold. However, rich gold deposits have been found in or near volcanoes at Lihir and Misima Islands near New Guinea, so one cannot dismiss gold opportunities on volcanic islands. All of Iceland is of volcanic origin, with acidic volcanic rocks like rhyolite and granophyre being present at a few localities.

To many geologists and prospectors, “greenstone belts” are synonymous with “gold belts” since they provide excellent places to search for gold.
